Hayling Islander article – December 2013

The Hayling Cycle Ride most obviously conjours up images of sunny days, perhaps with cyclists enjoying “a pit stop” at a French café . However at this time of year our thoughts naturally turn to the festive season and in particular our spin on it namely the annual Santa Ride. Now in its 18th year this event has become an important fixture in the Ride’s calendar. We will congregate at The Crown Emsworth on Sunday 15th December at 11 am prior to a tour along the Hampshire /West Sussex border punctuated of course by a few pub visits! Please join us. All riders past and present are welcome as are newcomers who just want to find out more about our organisation. All you need is a bike and Santa Suit!

It was good to see a good turnout at our AGM . I was delighted to see Hayling resident Sally Griffiths elected to the committee. Sally is a popular rider who has completed 12 of our events and is also remembered by many as one of the “Can Can Girls” at the 20th anniversary party ! I am sure Sally will bring great deal of enthusiasm to the committee together with much experience.

As we look out forward to cycling in 2014, the main focus is of course on the Paris to Hayling but we will also be organising our “spin off” event the Channel to Channel. The “C2C” will be held on the weekend of 17th/18th May and once again we will start from Bristol, for what will be the 14th event. The C2C is ideal for those who do not have the time to do our main ride or are looking for two days of good practice cycling in some fabulous country side. With New Year approaching it’s probably time to start preparing your resolutions and tacking one of our events would surely be a healthy and enjoyable option !
